Lately i have realised that i suck badly with recording. All i do is use my cell phones camera or recorder to record stuff which is not at all of good quality. I really want to get into some serious low budget recording stuff

My birthday is nearing in a couple of days and i have been expectin lovely gifts from my loved ones so i will make sure that i get what i want..

Requirement - Recording mic, Audio Interface??

Suggestions welcome...Total cash to be spent on me is expected around 5 - 7k i can add up a bit if required..

Interface is a very important tool and is one of my best investments till date..
I use a M-Audio fast track.. it's pretty decent.. other option you have is a Line 6 UX1/UX2 (not sure bout the name google it)
For the mic you can look out for sennheiser.. if you have the budget you can go for a Shure SM57/58..
It'll be better if you could get the stuff from US like you got the guitar..

Yeah i am a huge fan of Sennheiser. Love their headphones quality. I will definitely check out their mics.
Any software which is required. Or do interfaces give u a software CD along with it for recording? Or any recording software available on the net will work with those interfaces?

@rickkkyrich, I am planning to purchase the M-Audio interface, been use my friend's interface, how much does it cost? are there places where i can get it cheap? I do my acoustic guitar and vocal recordings with the Audio Technica AT2020USB mic and i am pretty happy with it, get really great quality recordings with it, but i can't get it to record my guitar amp well enough as it is a condensor mic, I also might go for the SM57/58 for the amp recordings.
Here is a clip of the recording from my Audio Technica AT2020 USB - Blowing in the Wind Cover on Guitar - Bob Dylan - YouTube

Dude M-Audio stuff is kinda expensive here in India .. will cost you around 8k... If any of your friend is coming down from US ask them to get it for you...Else look out for the used market... I have seen a few on sale...

How bout getting a multichannel(around 4-5 channels) mixer like behringer (approx 100$) and giving its output to a single channel Audio interface?
Or getting a multichannel Audio interface would be a better deal?

    Queries:-
What advantages does a mixer offer? Mixer such as behringer --> Audio Interface --> PC Software

Can a software which has the capabilities of a mixer will be sufficient enough? So in this case it wud be Audio Interface --> PC Software

Yes i do have an option of ordering it from US. few friends are returning in Feb. But the deal is i will have to buy it from one of the online stores there and ask them to deliver at my friends place in US.

@Rickkky - How much did u pay for ur M-Audio fast Track?

Think about it, mulitchannel mixer into a single channel audio interface. You're going to end up recording one stereo track with everything mixed down. It's the interface that's going to send the signal to the DAW. Single source = single track.

    In that signal chain, none.

That is how all home recording is done. Your DAW will have a mixer.

For 30 more you could've had the Mackie Onyx Blackjack or the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. Why didn't you buy one of those instead?

Point noted. Now everythin boils down to no of channels for an Audio interface.

The store guy suggested Sonuus i2M audio interface(single input) which has the capabilities to record in different tones(drums, flute, violin etc). Everything can be played from guitar. But i suppose this should be possible on other audio interfaces and their softwares too(correct me if i am wrong)..
    Sonuus i2M:-

Will definitely check Mackie Onyx Blackjack or the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 on the net.

Any idea about the Line 6 audio interfaces? They seem to have lot of modulations and effects.

    Requirements :-
Budget - Max 10K (This wud include mic too else i can invest 10k in AI and then later on buy a mic after a few months. for timebeing i can use some low end computer mic)
Channels - Minimum 2. I think 2 should be fine since if i have to record with my other band members i will place a mic and record through it....Or may be record individually....

The Sonuus is a 16bit/48KHz interface. That's a lower fidelity, when you can have 24bit/96KHz. The MIDI converter is only useful if you have a MIDI input and intend to use MIDI capabilities.

You can get the modulations and effects for free in Garageband. You can reamp your signal through the interface and run it into your pedal chain for real analogue effects.

The cheapest mic you should be looking at is the SM57, it's an industry standard. Costs around 5k/$99.

Musicians friend is offering the Tascam US-800 at $99 for some reason. Might want to check it out.

    Have shortlisted the following

    Focusrite:-
    Focusrite - Scarlett 2i2 USB 2.0 Audio Interface - Red/Black - Scarlett 2i2 interface&cp=1&lp=9

    Line6 UX1:-
    Line 6 - POD Studio UX1 USB Recording Interface - 99-073-0305 interface&cp=1&lp=1

    Line6 UX2:
    Line 6 - POD Studio UX2 - Black - 99-073-0315 interface&cp=1&lp=3

    Mic Shure SM57:-
    Shure - Dynamic Cardioid Microphone - SM57-LC sm57&cp=1&lp=1

Any final suggestions before i place an order from either of these in a day or two? Tempted towards Line 6 UX2(since the price is down to 129 from 199$)? What does Focusrite offer that line6 does not. Checked the fidelity part of it. And seems like they all seem to work in the same range. Correct me if i am wrong here. I want it for home recording (Guitars,Drums and bass).

How do you plan to record drums? You'll need multiple mics i guess for drums..
