I certainly have! 'Why this kolaveri di' - Dhanush & Anirudh Ravichander I'm not in it for the actor/hype/movie/blah, however. What I like is the tonality & particular chord prog used. It's easy to pickup + transpose and the pseudo reggae is groooovy. Do any of you remember the hip-hop song Black & Yellow? Sounds really similar, in fact the trebly glockenspiel riff would work really well in this Kolaveri song. I guess its simple lyrics are cool too.
I've heard it once because I'm subscribed to that channel on youtube but not raved about it or shared it or anything. I quite liked the song. They are actors? I thought one of the people in the video was Shruti Hasan but really have no clue if it really was. What does kolaveri di mean?
Ya i also kinda liked the song... and that girl is Shruti Hasan.. Kolaveri means murderous rage... i think.. i aint no Tamilian...
I didn't know anything about it either. I saw it on the front page at youtube.com/music! I was surprised they were featuring an indian song and once I heard it, I couldn't stop. The guy singing it is a Tamil movie actor I think, doing it for his+wife's (rajnikanth's daughter?) movie. And the composer is 21 which is damn impressive. There's a youtube bass cover which is quite well done and worth checking out.
I think it makes sense... - it's modern - has simple lyrics sort of making fun of english and empowering indian language - the chord prog is one of the popular minor sequences that people can recognize (tried and tested Im VII VI VII) - has a couple of stops and drum-lead crescendos that generally works - oh and he's singing about heartbreak most important was the video I guess, where they were seemingly just being themselves in the recording studio. These are just some points that I liked
you dont require these things to make it go viral.... there are so many *charming* videos out there... to go viral you just need an averagely good video and initial marketing skills...
I agree, you don't need them. In this case their marketing was this promo music video and having an 'actor' sing it. Just saying that the song itself is not half bad.
I think it's a landmark really...an independent, original music video going viral in India stirs up hope for other people and hopefully, becomes an alternate platform like it has in the west. edit: And I just saw that it isn't an independent video...its done by sony. very clever!
I loved it. Don't know why. If you ask me for a proper explanation as to why, I have none, but I love it. May be the 'herd' mentality is working ! Viral !
Not really. I do believe that the indy is getting stronger in India. You can tell by the fact that music videos now seem to prefer showing the musicians at the studio and how everything works inside as compared to a corny video where the singer sings a song to a new model who will eventually be semi-famous. Even TV shows seem to be doing this....look at Coke Studio, its Indian version and some show that I haven't seen called Dewar(?). I think this shows a shift in taste to an extent. Let's look at this for comparison: Aankhon Mein Tera Hi Chehra.mp4 - YouTube where the band does not feature. shaan tanha dil - YouTube where at least the lead singer features Shafqat Amanat Ali Khamaj Coke Studio - YouTube and now! Of course, isolated examples are not the best way to go but I believe that these seem fairly representative of non-bollywood music of their times.
could hardly find tamil lyrics in this song...may be thats why i like this...the tone reminds me of 'honey singh -vol-1(non veg )'hehe
Tharen - Why this kolaveri di? (Metal Version) by Tharenii on SoundCloud - Create, record and share your sounds for free Metal version !!!
Oh MY YHWH! This is the song that everyone is getting worked up at? (just head yesterday at gym, and believe me the whole gym was up in arms - ergo the song promptly changed. The gym crowd is the "pop music" crowd - bollywood etc) If this is popular - its nothing but correct marketing, and nothing else. There are countless bands in India, who produce BETTER and more groovier music, sadly - no marketing = languishing in the dungeons.
