I knew someone in a music forum, and she told me that music can be divided into good and bad. I just can't agree with her. She told me that because she is older than me and she listened to a lot of music and she found that some are awesome while some are terrible. I am trying to explain to her than different people listen to and prefer to different musci, but she just cite me a lot. She said this kind of people like this kind of music and that kind of people listen to that kind of music and this kind of people don't listen to that kind of music and so and so on. Finnaly I am speechless.

However, I just can't agree with her. So what do you guys think of this? Just give me any ideas that you believe.

i really dont think that there is good music and bad music...
its all just about your personal preference
i know metal heads hate rap and bollywood whereas "taylor swift fans" hate metal
    but thats exactly my point
    music has so many aspects
rap has very strong base lines taylor swift has the lyrics
bollywood has a bit of both worlds
metal has 'real' instruments being played
personall i prefer instrumentals by satriani and becker but that doesnt mean that i can call punk rock "bad music"

Of course there is bad music and good music.

My self composed piano pieces = scatty music
Chopin's piano pieces = great music

And all living creatures will agree to the above.

To put it in another way, most genera of music cannot be classified as good or bad.

But when a genre like rap/hip-hop gets filled with artists who don't have a clue as to what even singing in key is, that kind of music degenerates to what I would personally call bad music. I mean Tupac, Public Enemy used to be okay back in the day but most of the (c)rap that comes out now is plain boring and sad.

Tupac is regarded as the greatest rap artist by his fans, critics and insiders.
What do you mean by a genre like rap gets fills with artists who don't have a clue as to what even singing in key is.

What I meant to say is that Tupac could sing a tune and had a basic understanding of music.
But newer artists like Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Ja Rule etc can't even sing a tune as they are pretty tone-deaf. The least they can do is take up basic music training so as to at least know what music actually is. Sorry if the artists I have mentioned are archaic as I haven't listened to any newer stuff for the same reasons as above.

Gah, bringing hip-hop/rap into a music discussion is a mistake right there

The funny thing I realize about popular music is this:

Early cave man probably with limited intellect, (and all that was spent entirely in gather food and providing shelter), started with music.
This music was simple and more of a rhythm than a melody.

As human mind grew, and became more adept in specialized tasks - the music grew more melodic and less reliance on rhythm.
(not) surprisingly we are seeing a reversion back to music which is rhythm oriented rather than melody.

A reflection of human mental faculties?

Because BJR started his/her career as a troll.
Later after giving up the arms and guerrilla tactics, he joined the mainstream politics.
And now regrets missing the fun that trolling provided him.

Heck, even I miss the "trolling" days, with alter egos.

I mean what you said is a great example. You just said that your music is scatty while Chopin's are great, and the whole world know this. It's funny! Hey, stop joking !
