Hello to all, this is probably my first post on IGT
Currently I am doing my 12th, but after I want to pursue music as my career, I am seriously good at my instrument(Vocals) but still I want to take some pro training before completely launching myself.

My main focus is on Pop/Rock type of music, which in India is not promoted very much...i don't know the reason.

Going anywhere outside India like Musician's Institute or Berklee College of Music in USA, they cost like a bomb

Cuz I wanna go to a place where I could meet my future bandmates, I had been in a band 1yr ago in New Delhi, we had been doing really good there, we got a gig at Hard Rock Cafe(but my dad pulled me out of there, thats another story)
But I am passionate and ambitious.

What would you guys advise so as what shall I do, I am planning to shif t Pune and join DSK Supinfocom(Its a designing college) and continue my passion there and as I would be doing a course from DSK it'll secure my future.

But the prob is that I wanna completely focus on music and nothing else.
For that I need to go to some good music college...but no college in India teaches pop/rock to provide me with a platform.

    good luck brother....wishing from heart

    Thanks for the support man, but as you see I always wanted to go outside India as they can provide better launchpad; Trinity won't be of much help unless I take up Jazz or Blues;
Can I ask you why are you trapped?? Passion knows no bounds dude...
    Main problem is money...
    Thanx fr ur answer

Music is not really a "career" in India.
You may be a professional, but you'll be earning more from "day-job" and music becomes the secondary "hobby-job"

Hey alpha1 I already said I wanted to move out, money money money!!!
But now the scene is changing more labels like BeatFactory Records Label in Delhi they publish Pop/new age music in the country, its still in its infancy...it'll take a lot of time to mature.
    Thnx fr ur answer.

yeah but even with all that coming up the revenue through music unless you're REALLY GOOD AND/OR FAMOUS will be negligible. don't put all your hopes in the wrong basket..

@Aryan - Music and Business are two different equations all together. They don't gel well.

Let's see some basic points - Music in Indian scenario has improved over years, but having said that, we need to take into account various other things.

As some have mentioned, music/entertainment industry in India is still in it's infancy. Unless you have tons of money / have a family involved in music, it's very difficult for you to launch yourself on pan-India platform.

The biggest problem being there is no proper channel to showcase your talent, and even if you want to, the so called successful people will not easily let you come up (remember you are a competition for them and you'd be stealing away their market provided you are exceptionally good !!).

Now when you think about launching yourself globally, you need to have tons of money, proper marketing and good contacts. To put it in simple words - If Vijay Mallya's son, Siddarth Mallya wants to be a rock star, it's an overnight job for him !

In my honest opinion, you should take up a course that pays you well (that's what is a career) and never give up on music and gradually try to make a name for yourself in the industry. Classic example: Mano Murthy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That's the only way for us, at least for now.

Don't take my advice as an expert opinion, it's just MY opinion and I'll not be able to guide you better without knowing a lot of other facts !

Whichever way you decide to go, all the best boy !!

    Cheers..

How bout tryin in Indian Idol or similar reality shows? It might give you a lot of exposure in case you're seriously good at vocals...
Also if possible try to post some of your recording so that people can guide/judge you better...

I understand what you mean...that's why I was thinking of doing some course based on computers like Product designing in some metro like Pune, Mumbai or Delhi; cuz I'll be able to find my band-mates there for sure; nationwide colleges arrange a annual cultural fest(IITs, VIT etc etc) moreover metros have many other places to get live as well....so gaining popularity won't be a big deal...but the problem lies with the publishers(record labels); I have not heard any Indian label publishing Pop/new age rock music on a broader scale...they are limited to bollywood, This is reason my mind turns towards moving out of India and get enrolled in some Music college like Musician's Institute,USA, it will surely provide with a very strong platform to make industry contacts as well as getting live.
    Thanx for ur apt advice!!!

Dude I am more into new age modern music rather than Bollywood music....so Indian Idol is not for me; as for videos I have plans for it too.
    Thanx

I get it...biggest prob in the way is the initial investment in this venture...for being famous I'll need to play live in various parts of country, I am ready for all that...the thing is there are not good labels that could publish or promote you music in a broader sense...like doing tours and stuff and these things are already present in USA but the competition there can't be neglected, it'll be fierce for sure.
    Thanx

I hope you know Vishal Dadlani.. Famous bollywood music director.. he has a band Pentagram.. he is doin well in both the field.. he earns the money from Bollywood and is pursuing his Rock music interest as well... Total Win !
Dont be restricted by genre at least initially...

You know you should consider moving to indi-pop/bhangra-pop/bollywood music.
That at least has some fair chance (which is still very minute in absolute terms) of remuneration.

Music skul can give you a initial platform to get live and it helps you a lot to make contacts, moreover you can meet a lot of people of common interests there you see.

and, ppl here hv enough knowledge abt our nation's music interest...unfortunately they're right

@admin.....a kind request...i think nobody will ignore a topic 'taking music as profession' ....only if u r interested enough to put some data here....yes alpha, ricky, morbid etc r right....but still....something is better than nothing....many ppl out here deserve a better option than playing in some restaurant...can u provide some info abt it?

seriously? gained contacts never do much. most of them have bigger obligations to their family and the people they knew before you probably to help out and push ahead in music. why would someone you meet for a few years in music school wanna help you out unless you're really good?

bottom line is you just gotta be really good and contacts and all are not the way to go.

Isn't that a better thing to do (to earn money), instead of living off your parents, while you are cutting your first demo or loitering about music producers?
