Best processor for heavy metal at around 4.5-5k..?

well i just bought a new electric two months ago (an esp ltd f-10)and ive been using a digitech hot head distortion but i want to upgrade to a good processor..
and since im a rhythm guitarist,im not lookin for one with too many fancy effects,just some amazing distortion..

any ideas guys?

If you just want heavy distortion, get a good distortion pedal!

I just got a Barber Dirty Bomb , myself and it's brilliant.
Try and find one used.

Or look at AMT pedals....the fatal tube distortion sounds really good.

+1 on the dirty bomb. one of the best high gain pedals i've played. so much more organic than the silly MT-2.

i didn'T buy it - i simply played it. it belongs to a friend (unet) who bought it used off the TGP boards i think. you can get them new from barber electronics directly for $130. boutique quality at a very decent price, probably one of the best made pedals i've seen. looks good both inside and outside; mil-spec construction. the tools out there hocking old fuzz clones for 300$+ need to take an example from dave barber for workmanship and VFM. i hope i can build like that someday.

 

if i have to choose between EHX metal muff or Barber Dirty Bomb.. which one shud i opt for? i have played none till date..

 

i prefer the dirty bomb myself, it's a bit more versatile and responsive. the metal muff is more metal, i guess. the dirty bomb is a bit more "open" and dynamic IMO.

 

Dirty bomb is pretty good.

An EQ pedal can also be tried.

 

AMT distortion pedals are also good but they don't have mids controls. So an EQ pedal becomes more important with those.

 

For your original question, i would say the RP 80/90 is the best in the sub 5K range. They are pretty much your only option. As for the whole metal thing. it would all depend on the amp you have. If you are playing through a stranger, forget about the pedals - they would sound horrible.

My advice is to save up a little bit and get a processor like the zoom g2 and put more attention to the playing. They give good enough tone for the indian metalheads.

 

Definitely. Even with insane tone you're going to be frustrated if you can't play what you want to.

If you only have 5k odd and don't see yourself investing in a good amp for a long while, an MFX may be the way to go. A bad amp can make a great pedal sound like crap. A good amp, well, might not require a pedal at all.

 

They have bass and treble controls.
When you reduce bass and treble = boosting the mids.
When you reduce bass = upping the mids and treble
When you reduce treble = upping bass and mids.

What more do you want?

If you want to really change the character tone of pedal - you anyway need to have parametric EQ with lower mids and higher mids dialled in - and then play around with them to get more Marshally tone, or more Mesa-ish tone etc.

Something that cannot be achieved with a simple "MIDS" tone control knob.

hey !!! i have been learning guitar for over 6 months now.....earlier i had a gb&a CBK 100 acoustic guitar that i purchased for 3500 bucks......now i m planning to buy a new guitar.......my budget is around 7000-7500 this time......so please recommend a good guitar ...this i want to go for a BRANDED guitar say YAMAHA.........!!! so plz help ......

 

that's an impossible task - different types of metal have different EQ settings. kerry king is known to super-boost all his mids; the metallica tone boosts mids before distortion and cuts them afterwards. djent is mid heavy modern high-gain, thrash goes easy on the mids and accentuates the bass and treble. rammstein is ultra-scooped. zakk wylde is mid-boosted again. classic metal tones are generally a bit brighter. doom/sludge has a somewhat flabby low end. the list goes on. there doesn't seem to be a specific type of sweet metal tone as such.

the next question is what EQ are you talking about - pre-gain or post-gain, on the amp or on a pedal, etc.

usually metal tones are very sculpted, needing multiple EQ or filter stages. you need to unnderstand that you have to divide EQ and distortion over multiple stages even more in metal than in other genres.

so my only advice is to experiment as much as you can and find something that suits you.

one thing i ALWAYS do though is cut the area around 400 Hz with a parametric EQ by about 3-6dB. that's the boomy low mids. gets rid of mud considerably.

 

^dude my processor dont show the Fs and dB levels... i donno how things are related..it shows 0-50 for low, low-mid,high-mid and high. any opinions?

 

^ Just boost the mids before distortion (like using an EQ pedal or Tubescraemer).
Cut most of the treble and bass before dist.

Now after distortion - boost the 500-800 (honky) part, and cut the 1500-3500 (harsh) part.
You may boost the 5000Hz part (sizzle) to get some sparkle.
