Do you really think so? I always wonder where we'd be now if Hendrix had lived to be 60. See what Clapton is now versus what he used to be...or even John McLaughlin (if you want a more impressive example). What if Miles Davis had lived on?

they would've faded away or would be basking in glory of past years.

One thing you need to accept is that most music catches on like a fad. And then goes away.

Grunge came with Nirvana/Pearl Jam/Soundgarden etc.
See where is Pearl Jam right now musically?

Eric Clapton is still the slow hand.

Mile Davis had started declining "Jazzically" in 80s.

If Hendrix had lived till now, he would still be playing his old hit songs, and trying to come up with new experiments like playing metchul - with the real metchulheads "pooh-pooh"ing him, and the real fans claiming he has gone to dogs.

True there would be exceptions that were accepted widely - like Laughlin.
I guess Jazz gives more chance to evolve and prove yourself in different ways.

In more mainstream and pop music - there is simply no chance you can carry that out.

You're talking about mainstream catching on like fads. True. It just so happened that the world was hell bent on going away from mainstream in the 60s and that's why the beatles got as famous as they did. People today seem to run to embrace the mainstream...afraid that they'll get left behind if they don't.

Hendrix, in my opinion, was on a different plane though. He broke ground then so what would stop him from breaking it now?

Eric Clapton wasn't like this when he started. He was actually very similar in style to Jimi Hendrix at that point. He was a monster guitarist and his work with the Yardbirds and Derek and the Dominoes does show him that way. I think his music evolved the way it did because of the sadness in his life in general with Pattie Boyd and then with the death of his son. Incidentally, the Mr. Slowhand tag comes from a concert where he took a considerable amount of time changing his guitar string and not, as people often mistakenly interpret, because he wasn't fast on the fretboard (I'm not insinuating that you didn't know that....but did you?).

Also, the mistake some musicians make is trying to stick to the same genre throughout their lives. I've often said this on here before...if music is supposed to expressing what's inside you and you don't stay the same forever, why do you expect your music to stay the same? Surely, it should change with you? It's rare for someone to stay the same as they were in their 20s.

The problem with Rock music is that it's become mainstream now...but this had to happen right. The generation before us loved rock music so it's obvious that they approve of it....which goes against the very soul of rock music which was a form of rebellion. Of course, it had to die out. It's a circle really...not easy to find a root in it.
