You know the rule about tattoos right? Other people's tattoos are like other people's children, they're the only ones who think they're interesting.

Do you really want to ruin your guitar's finish with a shitty sticker? C'mon. It's probably not as cool as you think it is.

Put a sticker only if it's SO AWESOME that you can't even imagine ever wanting to take it off.

If you do decide to go ahead, then there are other questions to answer, like what'll happen when you take it off. Is your guitar's finish going to come off as well? Will you need to scratch the damn thing off?

    Think twice.

    Better question.

Can I paint my guitar with (artist's) acrylic paint?
(I don't see how it could hurt as long as I a. use thick paint, not thinned and b. dont let it seep into joints and pickups and the like.)

Edit - OP, if it's a guitar that's not black like mine, there's always a felt tip pen to be used...custom graphics! xD

Yup, this is the better question.

The problem (Rather, I think this will be the problem, never tried it) is that the paint is pretty much irreversible right? If you try to take it off won't the finish come off?

Anyone knows of a nice reversible solution to jazz up your guitar with paint-y graphics?

To take it off, yeah, several hours (or maybe days, weeks, etc) of work...you scrape and sand off the entire finish, I hear.

    No clue about your query.

I think the more important thing would be how bad covering the guitar with yet another layer of paint would be for its sound (am guessing it'll be minimalistic, at worst)

technically, you can, but it's probably the lousiest material to use. keep in mind that it will most likely not adhere to the guitar surface. also, sweat is an enemy here. another thing to consider is that artist's acrylic usually requires thinner in one form or another - whether that thinner is water or solvent based. artist's acrylic was meant to be used on highly porous materials like paper or canvas, a lot of it's adherent properties depend on this. with wood it might be weird, on paint it might just swipe right off.

the paints used while manufacturing guitars is extremely different from artist's acrylic paint. urathene, nitrocellulose and polyester form the bases in most cases. rarely, you'll find a guitar that's finished in shellac, beautiful but delicate and time consuming.

you certainly can experiment with artist's acrylic... i would think that it would work provided you strip back the original paint down to the primer, then try painting on the primer. there is a very small chance that the acrylic will not adhere to that either. when you're done with it, a few coats of clear will be quite necessary IMO.

@guitardoctor: it won't really make a difference if you're painting on top of an existing poly (or any other finish for that matter) layer. if somebody claims they can hear one, i'm going to call him a ****ing liar and a shitfaced cockmaster.

i can give coherent replies, but sometimes there is a first post or a thread topic so unabashedly stupid and facepalm-worthy that i just go into /b/ mode. this is one of them.

I don't get it. Could you elaborate? Are you saying that the sound will go dead? And what about removal of the paint... Any reversible solutions?

    Aha, I thought I recognized a /b/tard!

yeah do that , and put some big bends kissan sauce after restringing your guitar with spaghetti ... you might even consider replacing that sucky non locking nut with a freshly roasted pea-nut , for that cruchy tone
