Hey guys I recently bought an used Electric Guitar. I want it to be in perfect condition. Wat all precautions shud i take? I have heard that there're many oils available for the fretboards. Shud i buy one of them? I hope to hear from the many experienced guitarists here as to how they take care of their gear.
Wipe the fretboard and strings down with a clean dry cloth after each session. Wipe the body and other painted parts with a soft dry cloth. Everyday maintenance goes a long way. Oiling your fretboard is a once or twice a year thing. As for what to use, there are a billion opinions, but stay away from anything silicone based. GHS Fast Fret, Fretboard Honey, Dunlop Lemon oil are some options.
dunlop's cleaning kit is a good one. but the fretboard conditioner is NOT for maple fretboards. just be careful with that.
just wipe strings/fretboard after playing. also anyplace where the guitar is in contact with your body - forearm etc. DON'T touch the pickups.
Frame it inside a closet made of 40yr old Burmese teakwood with 8mm glass panel. Vacuum seal the enclosure with hide glue and ensure temperature, pressure and humidity consistency by installing a hygrometer, thermometer, barometer. Use a milspec altimeter to ensure altitude of the guitar is not more than 1000 meters ASL and not below 999 meter ASL. Installation of the guitar closet should be done in an ESD-neutral hermetically sealed room. Ensure all surfaces are at the same electric and magnetic potential by deploying voltmeters and magnetometers at strategic places inside the room. Ensure the room is vacuum-sealed to prevent capacitic drain of the pickup magnets because air acts as a dielectric medium. Also, employ a tachometer computer-linked to a conveyor belt to allow motion that negates fluctuations in the rotational speed of the earth. Or.....use a cloth.
+1.....awesome suggestion!........perfectly explained!......hope rickyrich follows what you said.....dude pls stop startin thread for every god darn thing.....god save this forum!..........about cleaning pickups...its very simple...just lick em clean with your tongue when connected to the amp!...you might even end up inventin some strange sounds a la jimi hendrix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sure ill rickyrich!....while you sleep nibllin on dollar's lil wee wee!..........haha....enjoy maadi!........
I think Rickyrich has raised a very pertinent issue that most of us ignore (me included )...But i know some old timers and also couple of my frns who are very particular about guitar maintenance... One of my frns uses a Planet wave wax every fortnight for the fretboard and he says it works well for his guitar and keeps it greasy....His is a reasonably old Jackson Kelly Custom shop and still looks new...i take the easier route, get it serviced by a local craftsman.... That's why some guitars look new even after 25 years and some others are in dilapidated condition after 2-3 years.....
@ThinkVoid: Dude thanks for understanding and supporting.. @mickey: go learn ur basics..and do justice to ur jackson..
No offences meant.....Was just trying to present my view on the topic... BTW, i know both mickey n ricky in person..... so, i have my own vested interests here for not opposing either ;-)
yo, haven't recorded the new amp again... still learning about mic placement! will complete my mail to you which has been in drafts for a while now. IGT is a failplace thanks to no image display. this is IGT in real life: https://www.myconfinedspace.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/COS-EFG-Party.gif
