What potential do you thing the singer+songwriter genre/acoustic folk genre (english)have in India? If you haven't heard of it try Cary Brothers or Damien Rice.I don't really see a lot of acoustic music coming out here.Rock bands are the usual go for teens,I think.

I think the genre has some promise if you're looking at a Hindi act. While it's all very well to say music has no language, people often connect to the lyrics which makes it hard to do well as an English act.

Of course, doing well has it's own degrees. If you call being able to survive on your music doing well, you can make it. I believe if your music is good and carries a message that appeals to people, you'll survive. Just don't expect to go platinum.

Also, music has a lot to do with attitude. It's natural that teens get attracted to a genre which, to a large extent, challenged authority at one point.

I was planning to go for English. But the thing is,I've not yet seen one.Of course I don't intend to go platinum..all I'd look for is a very small but loyal fan following. But it's a shame the genre doesn't do well with the general public.I tried playing a few artists to my friends and the overall verdict turned to be biased a bit with the girls,a few guys loved it and overall it turned out the genre just doesn't have much exposure..I really feel it's an underrated genre and hopefully it'll grown on people one day.
