Blind Guardian is good epic-fantasy-metal. Their choruses are better than any other band that I can recall of. Andre Olbrich's solos are very melodic and their former drummer Thomen must go down as one of the top drummers. Their successful albums are Imaginations From The Other Side, Nightfall in Middle Earth (based entirely on Tolkien's Silmarillion), Another Night At The Opera (they became a bit progressive in this one) and Somewhere Far Beyond. Their earlier albums also have a few gems here and there and is, perhaps more power metal than these recent ones.
If you like either/both Blind Guardian and Iced Earth, you might want to check out the Demons n Wizards project - a joint venture by Hansi Kursch (vocalist, BG) and Jon Schaffer (Guitarist, IE). They have two albums so far. The first one, Demons n Wizards was quite good. I haven't checked out their new one, which came out this year.
Sonata Arctica are a very new band. Their first album, Ecliptica, came out in 1999. Since then, they have released 3 more, not including a Live album. Their music relies heavily on keyboard and guitar mix. I believe Jayswami (a former IGT member) is going to open for Sonata Arctica in Seattle soon. I think Ill write more details on a separate thread.
Some others are - Angra, Helloween, Hammerfall, Kamelot, Elvenking, Lost Horizon, Rhapsody, Stratovarius.
Rhapsody have some interesting music, more symphonic than other bands, almost to the point of resembling film scores.
Bear in mind that I'm mostly focusing on European Power Metal.
The words of a banished king
"I swear revenge"
Filled with anger aflamed our hearts
Full of hate full of pride...
Oh, we screamed for revenge
