    Post ROCK N' RIFF Weekly!

    This thread is a tribute to the great IGTian esgallindeion.

    He started this thread on 9-12-2003. Riff of the week
    IGT was not famous enough and there weren't as many members. specially not many guitar/music freaks..
    Essi has left the forums and i'm sure everyone wants him back..

    This column will constitute my own work, and I will be posting riffs from songs of different genres every week on Saturdays. though it will be more metal i know..

    Please do not post any replies to this thread.

    If you like the work, add me some reputation and/or rate this thread. u can also PM me..

    I'd like this thread to be made sticky so it does not get lost.

    I hope you like my work.

    Some tips - (only try this if you are having problems playing it on your own... its much better to play the way it comes naturally to you.)
    -Place your fingers in the position to play C#m bar chord.
    -Don't remove your index finger which acts as a bar... you know, pressing all the chords. This is because until the very last note their is no note played which comes before the 4th fret on any string. And neither does any note go very far from the 4th. So you can play it quite easily. Its easier, believe me, though I don't play it this way.
    -Play it freely.

    Though i have to confess i have never heard this track.

    Due to his busy schedule, 6string has asked me to help out with the Weekly Riffs section.

    I may not post very often but I will try to post whenever I can.

    So for this week let me start off with the famous opening riff to Master Of Puppets.

    The first bar is probably the easiest part of this riff. It goes something like this.

    Here is the catch though: This entire intro is to be played using downpicks only. NO CHEATING BY USING ALTERNATE PICKING.

    The 4 chords are just simple power chords. Although this tab is in approximate timing, listen to the song to get a feel for how to play it. The second part begins at the end of the bar which is troublesome for those not used to fast picking.

    The trick is to play slowly until you get it and then increase speed like everything else about guitar playing.

    The above part should pose no problem really. For the above power chords it is easiest to make a bar with your ring finger at the 7th fret and bar the D, G and B strings using just one finger. Takes a little practice if you are not used to playing barre chords. The second part is a similar pattern to the previous bar. Except just on the E string. Remember; no alternate picking. Pure downpicks.

    Play the above 2 bars together and repeat 3 more times (without the opening 4 power chords; so you begin to repeat at the end of the first bar). You have mastered the opening riff to Master Of Puppets. Listen to the song for a better idea.

    Continuing the Master of Puppets intro tutorial

    We now have the famous 'spider' riff. This will be rather hard to play if you aren't used to fast finger movement and fast downpicking. As always try it slowly, then increase speed.

    When the open Em chord is struck the second guitar plays the fill below. The open E notes at the end of the riff above are the first notes of the verse riff which I will post next week.

    Eric Clapton - Layla

    This is one of Rock's most recognisable riffs. So electrifying the sound that is produced by Clapton when he plays this riff it ensures that you are never tired whenever you hear this song. A tip on how to learn how to play this song. Do not try and mimic Clapton's speed at which he plays this, you will find that your won't get the best sound. It is best to start slowly until you can hit all the notes properly, then the speed will come naturally. In fact if you listen to most of his live gigs then you will find that he's always playing it a different speeds, but its the way the flurry of notes gel together is the one thing that is difficult to master. Which is why some people just say that only Clapton can play this riff, but that isn't entirely true as this riff is easy to play but difficult to master perfectly. Anyways enough boring chatter on with the riff !

    The riff comes in two parts, the first part is the start of the song which should be played twice:

    This is then followed by the second part of the riff which is played much further down the fretboard. btw it is important to remember that if you are playing in a band where there is more than one guitarist then one person has to continue playing the first riff while this second riff sits on top of the first.

    the above may look complicated with the timings but let me explain. The riff starts half way through the bars in both instances, they are repeated but because they appear halfway through the bar, due to a brief pause at the start of the song, they are written out the way i have done so above. However all you need to do is simply just loop the notes and you'll see that it sounds right.

    killer riff!!! turn down ur mid - turn up the treble put un some metal dist and play this - the riff is quite easy except for the harmonics u need to get it proper each time.
