Here is something that u can try:-
-Dont play the song on exact same scale as the original. Play it in other scale. lower Higher whatever everyone is comfortable with. But difference should be noticeable.
-Add melody line with the vocals.
-For solos dont know how experienced you guitar player is but tell him tht. Just go with the feel of the song wherever possible.
-Add new parts to the song.. Some more short solos in between..Extend rhythm and chorus section a bit. Add some nice groove some nice beats , some catchy riffs in between.
-Play a different percussion which is not in the original song. But maintain the same beat or rhythm.
-Change the strumming style..
