I must say that I learnt to play guitar completely on my own without anyone's
direct supervision(though i had some theorotical help). I first learnt bass
gutar and it was from one of the best institute and there i learnt notations
and other theories(about chords), then i bought a book called 'bass guitar
for dummies' which is a superb book and another book 'begginer's guitar
guide'. I learnt to change between chords, play barre chords, plucking, beats and lots of stuffs but didn't have much problem due to basic knowledge about
music.I don't have a guitar of my own but an acoustic bass so I borrow my
brother's if i wanna play. Anyways, guitar is not that hard lot to learn, I
    should say
First song I played: About a girl(that's why i included curt cobain in top 20
    Have A nice DAy :D

Well Such a useful thread.... awesome..
i learned completely by myself and from IGT, and also about 6 months ago and now im quite a good guitartist, well i started off after listening to the song Aadat from JaL, and straight away mastered its solo, and all this i did coz of one girl, jus to impress her, and amazingly i mastered the whole song jus in 2 days, including the solos,

its no doubt that a true lover can be a true guitarist....

    i took some classes for 2 months...they totally sucked...i wasn't getting anywhere...
i really wanted to play and sing at the same i decided to quit

After that i totally learned from net and books...and the ear training part...that i learned from watching my friend (who also hated classes!!) and how he used to guess the notes by listening to a song...I do the same thing...and i'm getting better by the day at it!!!

The site that helped me a lot was ...great...with all the videos and all
all very nice. i highly recommend it if u r an imbiscle newbie (like i used to be ) who hates formal lessons!!

I've been playing the keyboard for 3 years now - and within the space of two weeks I came across the Hotel California - live version, and Aadat - the original sung by Atif Aslam. Those two progressions just changed me - and overnight - I had decided to get to know the guitar better.

I started off in October 2004 - bought an acoustic to start off with and I had taken classes for two months. But those classes never helped - I only managed to learn a few notes and the teacher wasn't great.

A good friend of mine - a goan dude - plays in a band. He's another story on the GTar all together - so I took a few tips from him and started playing tabs.

When I got my hand-coordination going, he suggested I switch to rhythym guitar/chords. helped me here a lot - and now I realise how sad I sounded when I played tabs and how nice it sounds when you play chords.

Though I am still a beginner (playing those 4-fingered chords are beyond me!), thanks to my experience on the keyboard, I've been able to pick up the guitar fast - especially strumming patters and where to change chords.

I suggest you practise at home and get to know it, get the feel right. If you want to turn pro - you'll have to take up lessons with a pro, learn the right techniques, etc.

Learning the guitar is not enough though - it's important to learn music too. Understand the bass, chords, solos, intros, etc. Understand the type of guitars being used. Get a little technical - understand where the sustain handles come into play, where the pedal sets are useful. Combine good knowledge of this with a good ear for music and strong guitaring skills - and you have yourself a good musician :-)

Good luck guys. And thank you Jal! ::::-)

if you are just interested in playing the melody it is better you get a keyboard
its much easier to play individual notes in it.
chords are great because you can sing along with it.
it will sound relly great after just a few months.
