You do realize that melody plays a far greater role in defining music than the rhythm ...

I would disagree with this. I don't think there can be an argument to back either of us up here though. It's just something you think you know.

Of course, that doesn't mean I don't think the original poster doesn't have a point.

Well just to illustrate my point:

    You take a song.
    And change the rhythm structure.
    You can still recognize it.

    You take a song.
And change the notes played in it.
    Can you recognize it?

I disagree...what I think you're doing in your head is changing the rhythm a little and the melody completely. To start with, I don't think separating the two is a great idea. Anyway, I'd post a tune if I was good enough to...since I'm not, I'll use this link to illustrate my point.

The Easter Egg In Hans Zimmer’s ‘Inception’ Score | Geeks of Doom

To be honest, I found this amazing....and I really couldn't have been able to tell even if I'd been familiar with the original score.

would you care to explain why you think otherwise because i'm sure you can't explain it and sound older than 13 at the same time. you should seriously learn some manners for behaving on a public forum before posting something like this next time

I personally dont believe in this, but yes there are people who do. I'd rather not get into the rhythm vs. melody debate but i'd like to say for me the live performance, the interaction with audience is all a big part of the experience for me. Playing what i like is fine by me but i like the challenge of creating something that others will like. But then again my goals and reasons for playing music are different.

actually what a lot of people like depends on how they approach the music and hence, the challenge you speak of is rather a marketing challenge than a musical one. a musical challenge would be to create an objectively good piece of music that in an ideal world everyone would appreciate, if not like.

    Not really.
All I said was to keep the melody notes, and change the rhythm in whichever way possible.
Compared to: keep the rhythm and change the notes in whichever way possible.
Try this on someone who is not musically inclined.

And yes separating the two is not a great idea because both in unison make a good sounding music.
I cannot have good bhangra music on a waltz rhythm.

Unfortunately cannot access the video now, but when they talk about slowing the original three times, are they talking about only changing the speed/tempo or they are talking about changing the notes also (1/3rd freq of the original)?
