I do agree, I remember the story of the original Yamaha monitors, they were meant to reproduce terrible radio speaker quality sound. But I would like to have some reference of hifi speakers other than my own, to help the mastered track be as similar as possible across various transducers. As for mixing, I believe flat response (just close enough to it, not audiophile "quality") would be best to iron out kinks that will pose problems during mastering. From personal experience I know that what sounds good on my speakers/earphones can sound off on another set, so having a good initial mix is key.
