Here’s an article that I have edited for your fun, from the best-seller The Da Vinci Code. (those who have read it can get a little refreshed by the knowledge.)
The pentacle is the representative of the female half of all things, a very ancient and special universal symbol. In its most specific interpretation, the pentacle symbolizes Venus – the goddess of female ***ual love and beauty.
The planet Venus traces a perfect pentacle across the ecliptic sky every eight years. The Greeks used this eight year cycle for scheduling their Olympic games. Modern Olympics still follow the four year cycle, the half-cycles of Venus. The five pointed star almost became the official-olympic seal. Instead it was modified to five interconnected rings emphasizing inclusion and harmony.
The word “planets” can form 92 words using its letters, not repetitive, in any length we choose.
The alphabet phi (not pi) is known as the divine proportion and is equal to 1.618
It’s considered the most beautiful number in universe (this deserves some explanation, don’t you think?) it forms a fundamental ubiquitous building block of nature, w.r.t. the ratio of phi to 1. here are a few examples:-
The ratio of female to male honeybees in any beehive in the world is phi to 1.
A nautilus, a spiral sea-shelled cephalopod mollusk pumps gas into its chambered shell to adjust its buoyancy, has the ratio of adjacent diameters of the spirals as phi to 1.
A sunflower seed head has sunflower seeds growing in opposing spirals, with the ratio of each rotation’s diameter to the next as phi to 1.
Spiraled pinecone petals, insect segmentation, etc also follow the same pattern.
The quotients of adjacent terms of the Fibonacci series (a series wherin the sum of adjacent two numbers equals the next number, 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21 34…) have a property of approaching the number phi.
Leonardo-da Vinci’s “the virtuvian man” (a man spread-eagled within a circle) is till date, the most accurate of all anatomical drawings. It was named after Marcus Virtuvius, the brilliant roman architect who praised the divine proportion in his text De Architectura. Da Vinci actually exhumed corpses to measure the exact proportions of the human body.
Da Vinci was the first to show that the human body is literally made up of building blocks whose proportional ratios always equal phi. Try this out… measure the distance of your head to the floor. Then divide that by the distance from your belly button to the floor. The distances are in the ratio phi.
Similarly the ratio of distance from shoulder to fingertips, and the distance from elbow to fingertips is phi. Hip to floor and knee to floor. Phi again. Finger joints. Toes. Spinal divisions.
Artworks of Michelangelo,Albrecht durer, Da Vinci, and many others demonstrated their intentional and rigorous adherence of the divine proportion. Phi also was used in architectural dimensions of the greek Parthenon, pyramid of Egypt and also the united nations building. It appeared in organizational structures of mozart’s sonatas, beethoven’s fifth symphony and in works of bartok, Debussy and Schubert.
And last but not the least…The pentagram, or pentacle, associated with the sacred feminine, when drawn, automatically divides all the lines into segments perfectly according to phi.
Egyptian god of masculine fertility, Amon is represented as a man with a ram’s head, and his promiscuity and curved horns are related to our modern slang “horny”.
Amon’s couterpart, the Egyptian goddess of fertility was Isis. So we have the male god Amon and female goddess Isis, whose ancient pictogram was called L’ISA.
MONA LISA. That’s the secret of mona lisa’s smile. She’s neither male nor female depicted, but enforces the principle of androgyny. It is a fusion of both. Though, Da vinci enforced the feminine side more by tilting the horizon in the landscape of mona lisa significantly lower towards the left than the right, so that mona lisa would look much larger from the left side. And historically, female is associated with the left side. Left is female, right is male. White is female, black is male. Yin and yang. Because Da Vinci was a big fan of feminine principles, he made mona look more majestic from the left.
Female’s had been defamed to quite an extent, in medieval centuries, to such an extent that their association to the left side couldn’t escape. In French and Italian, the words for left – gauche and sinistra (check out gauche and sinister in the English dictionary too!) came to have deeply negative overtones, while their right hand counterparts rang of righteousness, dexterity and correctness. To this day, radical thoughts are considered left wing, irrational thought was left brain, and anything evil, sinister.
Speaking of sinister, we can talk of gargoyles, their mouths gaping to reveal their menancing hollow throats. When it rains, their mouths gush with water, and there reverberates a funny sound in their throats, a burping, “gargling” sound. That’s where they get their silly names, gargoyles.
