The Wicker Man (1973) - classic in the sense of its musical scores

    2001: A Space Odyssey (1960 something)

    Requiem For A Dream (2000)
You can believe what you want, it doesn't mean you're right. a fact of life.

    Forrest Gump
    The truman show
    The Shawsank redemption
    ...ranked in that order

I love that movie! I had never cared to watch it until last year and that too because I've been getting increasingly aware of media and the monster it seems to be....I'm not sure if it's always been this way or has it just started getting more obvious? I also wonder whether the movie was made before the reality TV boom or after? If it was before, I am really in awe of the person who made it....if after, still a great concept.

Increasingly aware in what context? Its their job to sell their product in what way they can..considering the fierce competition, they're driven to do extremes like us.We do the same in our way.. But ofcourse we don't kill people, or drive them to death whatsoever. As for the movie, its so old, I doubt if reality tv was even present that tym. Or maybe just a neo-natal stage. But its really great thinking. Everything about it is perfect.

No, not that way....in how the media can control us and that we really have no escape. I know I probably sound like a conspiracy theorist at this point but it really seems to work. In Germany, the only news I get of India comes from ndtv online....I'm sure there are better sources but I am lazy and do not hunt for one (plus it's familiar). So I read these articles and I sometimes think I see a very deliberate bias for or against something....I don't catch it all the time but after the first time, I've started trying to catch it and it seems to be getting more and more frequent. Of course, it's possible that a lot of it is just in my head....say, for example, the Anna Hazare issue. Over the few months after his protest, each of his "aides" (if you will) seemed to be targetted in sequence and taken apart and the media played a fairly large hand in it. I catch biases fairly easily in cricket because I've followed it most of my life.

You could say that media works to sell and that changes according to what people want to see....I wonder if that is still true? The media would work that way if they thought they were in danger of losing out to something else....I wonder if there is something else they can lose out to? Will people not switch on the TV after they get back home from a hard days work? Or will bored housewives not watch a saas bahu serial on a Tuesday afternoon? And all of these entities are also online so will you get away from them? will you want to?

I saw my first episode of a Chuck Lorre production a few nights ago and I was suddenly attracted by a message at the end of the show...it only shows up for a few seconds at the end but it pretty much captured a lot of what I was thinking. And now I'll watch his shows for the vanity card at the end! I thought it was brilliant:

We have once again arrived at a moment in history where the truth can be defined as "that which you can make other people believe." The methodology for creating that belief is repetition. Say something enough times and it becomes, for millions of people, the truth. I am endowed like a stallion. This is why control of the media equals control of the populace. I am endowed like a stallion. And also why a state run television news channel is so very dangerous. I am endowed like a stallion. Now there are those who would argue this has already happened and that a certain cable news channel is actually a covert extension of our government. I am endowed like a stallion. The fact that the channel is run by a high-ranking party official, an anchor person from the channel became a White House spokesman, and another top-ranking party official became an on-air news commentator is often used to make this argument. I am endowed like a stallion. Of course, this fact would be entirely inconsequential if the oft-repeated falsehoods they attempt to imbed into the Zeitgeist were simply amusing, or at worst, inane. I am endowed like a stallion. But, unfortunately, that is not the case. I am endowed like a stallion. The heavy repetition of lies and smears for political gain are by no means inconsequential. I am endowed like a stallion. Which is why each and every one of us must use whatever resources we have at our disposal to disseminate the actual truth. I am endowed like a pony.

Also, apologies for directing all my conversations into one single meaningless direction but it's what I'm thinking about a lot of late....this will end soon, I will wake up. And now back to regular thread broadcast:

I will keep adding to the thread with one great and one terrible movie at a time.
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !

    An all time favourite movie:

Maine Pyar Kiya- I love the music. I know none of it is original but that is no reason to not like it. I like S.P. Balasubramaniam's voice. I like Salman Khan and Bhagyashree and I love the Dil Deewana song. I think happy endings are nice :')

    An all time terrible movie:

Baaghban- I hate it when movies exaggerate everyday life and make an extended soap opera (or extended sitcoms). Baghbaan would probably make a great TV show to air at 9 pm Mon-Thu on starplus but why must they show it every week on a different movie channel? and why must my father watch it and then stare at me balefully?
And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
